CBC has announced comprehensive updates to the driver licensing system aimed at streamlining procedures and reducing pressure on test appointments, with a stronger focus on a safe driving record rather than repeated exams.
1. Removal of Road Test for Class 5
Starting in summer 2026, drivers holding an N (Class 7) license with a clean driving record will not need to take a second road test to upgrade to a full Class 5 license. Instead, the driver will enter a 12-month probationary period to demonstrate safe driving behavior before receiving the unrestricted license automatically.
2. New Graduated Licensing System*
The new system includes remaining in the N stage for two years with a clean record, after which the driver automatically advances to a restricted Class 5 license. Following an additional year without infractions, the driver receives the full license.
3. Online Services for License Renewal*
In a step to save time and reduce congestion, the government intends to make driver's license renewals or replacements available online by 2027.
4. Motorcycle License Updates
The new system will also include enhanced safety measures and longer training periods for those wishing to obtain motorcycle licenses.
Advice for Current N License Holders
Current “N” license holders can choose to take the Class 5 road test now before the new system is implemented to receive a full license immediately, or wait to benefit from the new automatic upgrade system after the probationary period.
